U.S. Figure Skating Reception 2019

Figure Skating in Detroit hosted its second annual reception “Champions for Life” sponsored by Lear Corporation in celebration of it’s recent success of building a foundation on ice in the city of Detroit. The program for girls of color that aims to help participants grow in confidence, leadership and academic achievement has done just that by launching its first summer day camp in July and the I Can Excel after school program in October. Guests enjoyed food, drinks and mingled with members of the staff, board and Champions Committee as well as the girls of the I Can Excel program as they talked about their experiences. With WDIV Anchorwoman, Kimberly Gill as the MC and an original Supreme, Mary Wilson as the special guest of the night, Figure Skating In Detroit set the tone for women empowerment. Kimberly Gill discussed the importance of giving back to the community, in efforts to see the young ladies of the Detroit grow to become empowered women through a foundation on ice that will guide them to success in all aspects of life.

Figure Skating In Detroit also awarded and acknowledged sponsors and donors for their encouragement, support, and belief in the program to help make girls of Detroit tomorrow’s leaders.

The girls of the I Can Excel program displayed confidence on stage as the shared their experiences that they have gained. 8 year-old Layla Wagner shared her story of being apart of the sisterhood of Figure Skating In Detroit and how she has found her new love for figure skating. “Figure Skating In Detroit is more than just a learn to skate program, it’s about leadership, determination, and self-esteem. I’ve learned that I truly can do anything I set my mind to,” said Layla.

This is a youth development opportunity for Detroit’s young women, wrapped around the fun, artistry and discipline of figure skating.”
